If the pen is infected, the moment you insert it,it will infect your pc,this is because the virus contains an autorun feature. You need to disable autorun on your pc for the drive (eg E ) that is the pen.

a bit of history - before the internet came along, the most common way for viruses to spread was with floppy disks people used to moving data from one machine to another

now it is the USB pen but people are only just now starting to worry about it

* insert the pen, nothing can come off it while it is just sitting there

* open your virus scanner, choose custom scan, choose the USB device's drive letter for scanning

* when done, do the same with your spyware scanner

as you are using the USB for transferring data between home and school, REMOVE IT while you are on the web, this way it won't catch anything for you to pass on to the college machines

if you get another virus at the college, report it to the administrator as they might be able to take it off the college machines in bulk
