What is nessus-looking for security software?

for a 4 computer network in a small business.

I need to know about all the security (in really basic terms) that you would need for a small business and need some software to recomend that does all that. any sites that explain everything you need would be greatly appreciated?

oh and i found this site that said something called Nessus is the best security for networks, what exactly is it and does it cover everything i need?

Nessus is a network vulnerability scanner.

Basically through a series of "plug-ins" and attack scripts, you attempt to compromise computers in YOUR network as a proactive security measure. These test will show you what exploits your network is vulnerable to, so that you may (hopefully) patch the problem services / machines before someone else discovers the vulnerability.

Nessus also gives you the choice between performing a regular non-destructive security audit on a routinely basis, or to throw everything you can at a remote host to see how will it withstands attacks from intruders. Its always a good idea to have a written statement authorizing your activities before beginning, so when you inadvertantly crash the server during peak hours you are covered.

Depending how much time you have to learn the tools / how mission critical the server is, you may want to have a look at BackTrack2.

It is superior to Nessus in many ways, although it does require an intermediate user ability in Linux.
